What is cervical radiculopathy?
Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a nerve root in the neck becomes irritated or compressed. It can cause pain that travels into the shoulder, arm or hand, along with tingling, numbness or weakness. The symptom pattern depends on which nerve root is affected.
What may cause it
A herniated disc or degenerative changes narrowing a nerve’s exit space may contribute. Imaging findings need to be considered alongside symptoms and the examination.
What we evaluate
The team reviews pain distribution, strength, sensation and reflexes as appropriate. Shoulder problems and nerve conditions elsewhere in the arm can produce similar symptoms.
When to seek prompt help
New or progressive weakness, hand clumsiness, or difficulty with balance or walking needs prompt medical assessment. Do not wait for a form response if symptoms are rapidly worsening.

More than
a stiff neck.
Neck pain can involve muscles, joints, discs, or nerves. Symptoms may stay in the neck or extend toward the shoulder, arm, or hand. An examination helps distinguish local pain from a nerve-related problem.
Notice what
has changed.
Bring specific examples of what you feel and which activities have become difficult.
Movement & stiffness
Tell us which directions are uncomfortable and how symptoms affect driving, work, or sleep.
Shoulder, arm & hand
Pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness extending into the arm may indicate nerve irritation and should be assessed.
Balance & coordination
New trouble walking, clumsy hands, or arm or leg weakness can signal a more serious problem and require prompt medical assessment.
Start with the pattern.
Then choose the plan.
Discuss when symptoms began, whether there was an injury, and how they change throughout the day. Bring details of previous therapy, medications, injections, and any imaging.
- Listen: your symptoms, health history, and previous care.
- Examine: movement and neurological function as appropriate.
- Review: available imaging and whether further testing is useful.
- Plan: reasonable goals, options, costs, and when to reassess.
Discuss your options.
Define your goals.
A useful plan should explain why each step is recommended and how you will know whether it is helping.
Rehabilitation & activity
Discuss an individualized movement plan, activity adjustments, and rehabilitation when appropriate.
Symptom management
Ask about medication or injection options, including the expected benefit, limitations, and risks for your health history.
Specialist input
Ask when persistent symptoms or neurological findings should prompt a surgical or other specialist opinion.

belong here.
Is all neck pain a disc problem?
No. Muscles, joints, and other structures can contribute. Your symptoms and examination guide the next steps.
What does a pinched nerve in the neck mean?
Cervical radiculopathy describes an irritated or compressed nerve root in the neck. It can produce pain or altered sensation down the arm, sometimes with weakness.
Should I wait after a neck injury?
Significant trauma, new weakness, or problems with balance need prompt medical attention. Do not wait for an online appointment response.
Do I need an MRI before scheduling?
No. Bring the records you already have and contact the team first. Your clinician can determine whether additional imaging would help.
What should I know about costs?
Ask which services are recommended, what insurance may cover, and your expected out-of-pocket costs before care begins.
How will we review progress?
Choose meaningful goals with your clinician, such as an everyday activity you want to improve, and agree on when to reassess.
